U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany Jr. of Louisiana, giving the Republican response to President Barack Obama’s health care address to the nation, urged Democrats to abandon their “government-run” approach and “start over.”
“Replacing your family’s current health care with government-run health care is not the answer,” Boustany said. “In fact, it’ll make health care much more expensive.”
Boustany, a cardiovascular surgeon for more than 20 years before winning a House seat from Lafayette, La., in 2004, said Republicans agree with Democrats on four “common sense” reforms. They are barring insurers from discriminating against those with pre-existing conditions, allowing small groups and businesses to band together to buy coverage at lower rates, providing subsidies to the needy and offering incentives for wellness and preventive care.
